Undergournd and aboveground storage systems incorperating metal components, have the potential for corrosion. The corrosion process requires certain elements be present for the corrosion process to occur. Since basic elements like electricity, oxygen and electrolytes are available, we can measure the corrosion rate of a metal.
The Federal EPA and state rgulatory agencies require that UST's be checked every three years for corrosion.
In order to stop the corrosion process all UST's are required to have some type of Cathodic Protection (CP) or the UST must be manufactured from a material that will not corrode.
In order to check the corrosion process a person must be certified to perform this test.
Several years ago, S.E.E., Inc. TRAINING developed a Cathodic Protection Tester Certification Course which is now used by states to qualify a person (s) to report the corrosion condition of UST's. This training program will take a person from the basic elements and train them to understand the conditions that will cause a UST system to either pass or fail a CP test.
